Contemporary Terraced Garden Design in Edinburgh

This project involved the complete redesign of a compact terraced back garden for a private residential client in Edinburgh. The north-west-facing garden extends over approximately 95 square metres and is positioned directly to the rear of the house, offering strong potential to become an extension of the interior living space.

The aim of the project was to transform the underutilised outdoor area into a contemporary, multi-functional garden room suitable for entertaining, dining al fresco, and relaxed family gatherings, while respecting the existing character and constraints of the site.

Client Brief

The client wished to create a garden with a strong, contemporary identity, defined by clean lines and a clear structure where form follows function. The key objectives were:
• To reinterpret the garden as a natural continuation of the house
• To introduce zoning with different functions for lounging, dining, and cooking
• To maximise the sense of openness, light, and order within a relatively compact space
• To retain the existing brick boundary walls while refreshing all other materials

The main challenge was working within a limited footprint and existing level changes, while ensuring the garden felt spacious, cohesive, and highly functional.

Design Approach

The design was guided by the principles of Genius Loci, respecting the character of the existing terraced setting while introducing a fresh contemporary language. The garden was structured around a simple rectangular geometry, reinforcing clarity and balance.
A strong visual and functional connection between the house and the garden was established by aligning levels, materials, and circulation routes.

Vertical and horizontal rhythms were carefully composed to create a sense of flow, while zoning was introduced through subtle changes in level, materials, and planting.
The existing central access axis was retained and enhanced as a key organising element, connecting all areas of the garden seamlessly.

Key Design Features

• Contemporary terraced layout organised across two main levels
• Large-format paving forming a lower terrace directly connected to the house
• Sunken lounge area framed by evergreen planting beds for privacy and intimacy
• Retaining walls softened with integrated planting
• Upper-level focal area combining porcelain paving and stone setts

• Small outdoor kitchen integrated into the upper terrace
• Lawn area framed by planting to create a green oasis within the urban setting
• Dining area positioned towards the rear of the garden
• Modern garden shed in neutral tones acting as a contemporary backdrop
• Retained original brick boundary walls to preserve character and context

3D Visualisation & Design Process

The design process was developed in two stages to ensure clarity and alignment with the client’s vision. Initial 3D volumetric studies illustrated the overall spatial arrangement, levels, and relationships between the house and the garden.

This was followed by a detailed presentation plan, planting plan, photorealistic 3D renderings, and a video walkthrough. These tools allowed the client to visualise materials, textures, planting structure, and movement through the space, providing confidence in the final design before implementation.

Outcome

The final design proposal successfully transformed the garden into a refined and inviting outdoor living space that feels both contemporary and welcoming. Despite its compact size, the garden now offers a variety of distinct yet connected zones, supporting entertaining, relaxation, and everyday use.

The project achieved a strong sense of openness and balance, delivering a garden that functions as a true extension of the home while offering privacy, structure, and year-round enjoyment.
