What To Expect Throughout Your Garden Design Journey

Every garden is different, but our process follows a proven framework that allows ideas to develop naturally while ensuring you remain involved from beginning to end.

1. Preliminary Consultation

Every successful garden begins with understanding the people who will use it.

During our initial consultation, we’ll visit your property to explore the existing garden, discuss your ideas and understand how you’d like the space to function. We’ll consider practical aspects such as levels, orientation, access, existing planting and architectural features alongside your lifestyle, budget and long-term aspirations.

Following the consultation, you’ll receive a detailed written brief outlining the proposed scope of work, design stages, estimated timescales and fee structure. This document becomes the foundation for the entire project, ensuring everyone shares a clear vision before design work begins.

2. Concept Design & 3D Visualisation

Once the brief has been agreed, we begin developing creative design concepts that explore how your future garden could look and function.

This stage focuses on establishing the overall layout, circulation, outdoor living spaces and the relationship between the house and garden. Rather than relying solely on drawings, we also create photorealistic 3D garden visualisations that allow you to understand scale, materials and planting far more easily than traditional plans alone.

The concept stage is highly collaborative, giving you the opportunity to review ideas, provide feedback and refine the design before progressing further.

3. Preliminary Masterplan

After the preferred concept has been approved, it is developed into a detailed masterplan.

This drawing establishes the final layout of the garden, defining pathways, terraces, planting areas, outdoor living spaces and key structural elements. Material palettes, spatial relationships and the overall character of the garden are refined to create a cohesive design that responds naturally to both the property and its surroundings.

By the end of this stage, you’ll have a clear understanding of how every part of the garden connects together.

4. Planting Design & Planting Plan

Planting plays a vital role in creating atmosphere, seasonal interest and biodiversity.

Our planting design service carefully considers sunlight, soil conditions, drainage, maintenance preferences and long-term growth before selecting suitable plants for each location.

You’ll receive a detailed planting plan showing plant locations, species, quantities and sizes, together with mood boards that help you visualise how the planting will mature over time. Maintenance guidance is also provided to support the long-term success of your garden.

5. Technical Design & Construction Drawings

Once the design has been approved, we prepare the technical documentation required for construction.

These drawings may include setting out plans, construction details, lighting layouts, level plans, cross sections and any additional information required for structural engineering or specialist installations.

Providing clear, accurate technical information helps contractors price the project correctly and ensures the finished garden reflects the approved design.

6. 3D Rendering & Video Walkthrough

Many homeowners find it difficult to visualise a completed garden from plans alone.

Our video garden walkthroughs allow you to experience your future garden before construction begins. Walking virtually through the space makes it easier to understand proportions, planting, materials and the relationship between different areas of the design.

7. Landscaping & Project Delivery

Once your design package has been completed, you’ll be ready to move confidently into the construction phase.

We’re happy to recommend trusted landscaping professionals whose workmanship we know and whose standards reflect our own design philosophy. However, you’re equally welcome to appoint your own contractor.

Because every drawing, specification and planting plan has been prepared professionally, any experienced landscaper can accurately price and build the project as intended.

Where required, we’re also available during construction to answer questions, carry out site inspections and help ensure the finished garden reflects the approved design.
